Evolution Of Industry

Industry involves production of products. The evolution of industry can be divided as handicraft stage, guilds stage, cottage industry stage, industrial revolution stage and modern stage.

Evolution of industry can be described as follows:

1. Handicraft stage

In handicraft stage, craftsmen produced handicrafts. Local agricultural goods, forest and mining products were used as raw materials. Surplus handicrafts were exchanged for other products as needed. Examples are bamboo baskets, hand tools, clothes, shoes etc.

2. Guilds stage

Guild stage was the beginning of organized industrial activities. In this stage, craftsmen producing same products formed guilds. Guilds were association. They supplied raw materials. Craftsmen produced quality products. The guilds market the products. Division of labor was practiced. There was no competition among members.

3. Cottage industry stage

In this stage of evolution of industry, enterprising craftsmen established their own cottage industries. They hired other craftsmen as employees. They also allowed artisans to work at home. They supplied raw materials and tools.

4.Industrial revolution stage (1760-1830)

In this stage, many new scientific inventions took place. Machine replaced handwork. Mass production became possible. It was carried on by many workers in factories. Products became standardized. Costs went down.

5. Modern stage

In this stage, technology is important. Automation, computerization, digitization and robotisation in industry are increasing. The use of information technology is increasing. Large scale production of quality products at low cost has become possible.
