Meaning Of Standardization

Different customers have different needs, wants and purchasing powers. A producer should produce goods of different sizes, standards, colors, quality, prices according to the consumers' physical structure, financial capacity, wants, interest, etc.

Standard and grade should be determined according to the nature, physical shape, name and capacity of such goods to make buying and selling, consumption easy.

Any product should have certain features that can satisfy the needs of the consumers to be successfully sold out. Standard or grade of the product should be determined according to the nature, quality, and features of the product. Standard or grade indicates such a basic qualities or attributes of a product, which is included in the product.

Standardization is the class or level of manufactured products, agricultural products or natural products. For the manufactured goods or agricultural product standard is determined on the basis of color, size, weight, quality etc. Generally, standard is determined on different basis. Standardization indicates the quality of the products, but not best quality.

Standard or grade indicates physical measurement. For example, ready-made garments and shoes are standardized with number, metal sheets, wire, pipe, rods etc. are standardized with gauge, electric motors are standardize with horsepower, food grains and fruits with weight of packet such as 10 kg., 15 kg., 50 kg. etc. These are the physical measurement of the goods. The same is called standardization. Different standard goods should be produced considering the needs of the different customers. For example, shoes, garments etc. should be produced in different standards like 2 No., 6 no., 8 No. So that the old, adults, children, babies can wear them according to their size. Similarly, other goods also should be standardized by which more and more customers can satisfy their needs.

Standardization as a function of marketing becomes possible only when goods of same features are produced and standardized. Standardization is the prerequisite to maintain in quality, color, weight and shape of any product. Every product should be distinctive and identified in units. Reputation and goodwill of producer or seller can heighten only through production of goods of certain standard or special description. This also helps to distinguish goods according to their quality and features.

Standard or class of products should be determined permanently, and should be recognized by most of buyers and sellers. It is better to determine standard by trade association, chamber of commerce and consumers' association for getting product accepted by buyers and sellers.
